The Wailua Falls are an easy waterfall to visit.  They are located on the road going towards Costco on Highway 56.  They are 140 feet high and  famous (in my book) for being the waterfalls featured in the beginning of the TV show Fantasy Island.  Am I dating myself?  Probably but Fantasy Island was a classic in the day (coming on right after Love Boat) … now that made for an exciting Saturday night….

In any case these falls are amazing.  You can drive right up and look at them from the top…. Insider tip ? You can also hike down (a treacherous trail) with ropes attached to roots to help heave you down the hill and posted signs telling you that you might die if you try it (a bit of an exaggeration but danger signs nonetheless so proceed at your own risk.)  The top of the trail is to the right of the view point when you are looking at the falls (before the parking lot) .. if you hang out long enough at the top you will probably see people walking down.  It’s often muddy and slippery but the good news is it’s really short. (15 min max).  You will see many locals down at the bottom swimming in the pools or taking photos near the falls.  NOTE : never swim in the pool when the waterfall is only one large chute (not split into 2 tails) – if it is one large fall that means there has been A LOT of rain and the currents will be dangerous – ask a local if you aren’t sure.  With the right conditions it is a great place for a waterfall swim (as far as I know the only one you can walk to in 10 minutes anywhere on Kauai) and it’s really close to the airport.  Just bring a bit of water (always when you hike anywhere) and wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty.  Enjoy!
