Freedom or bust!

Freedom or bust!

The scent of freedom
The scent of freedom

So …. Since I last said hello a lot has happened.  I actually went and did it .. I quit my job in corporate America and have gone rogue.  Well, that’s not entirely accurate.  Here’s how it went down … While vacationing on the Big Island (a.k.a. The Orchid Isle or just plain Hawaii),  while I was lamenting my fate of having to go back to my job at the resort, Kevin received a job offer for a Senior Audit position on Oahu – the only rub ? Well since he will be working on the military bases he needs secret clearance and they said it would take between 2-6 weeks. Ok, no problem, I am ever the optimist so after our return from vacation (around mid May) I “patiently” waited.  Well for those who know me you might know that waiting patiently is not something I do well (I am working on it).  I have very little patience once my mind is made up to do something and my mind was made up to quitting.  In any case I lasted until mid June and gave 4 weeks notice (I try and be fair and professional) and so my last day (aka the best day of my current existence) was last Thursday.

Let’s digress for a moment and consider last days of work – they must seriously be one of the best moments – when you pack up your items and whish out the door with a spring in your step waving goodbye to all with a giant smile of adieu ….. Thinking ‘ see ya suckas – I made it out the other side’.

But moving on, as you may have guessed from my hemming and hawing – we are still waiting for the secret clearance .. So though I quit citing Kevin’s upcoming job … He is still working at the same resort I was at (awkward) and now people are daily asking … Wow why are you still here Kevin?  Ha, ha … I laugh now but hopefully that clearance comes through soon if not we will activate Plan B.  What is Plan B?  Let’s go travel!!! We’re thinking of south-east Asia at the moment (it’s cheap and beautiful with the best food ever in Thailand!) or bike ride through France (this is a seasonal option as we don’t want to take this one on in winter…) or road trip across America to find the best little town there is  and figure out how to live the simple life … Yes Plan B is not yet concrete but available in a pinch….

So now I have been through my first week of unemployment … It has been years since I have been unemployed and I still have to get used to it .. I still feel anxiety in the morning as if I will need to check my work emails and begin my day with some urgent matter at work that would need to be addressed before morning coffee.  I have an almost   Pavlovian reaction to the vibrating sound a phone makes to report an incoming email – that is to say that I experience immediate anxiety paired with a tightening of the jaw and a lifting of the shoulders … One might say a defensive posture .   I am still trying to plan my days to fulfill my promise to myself that I will complete at least one activity that I have not done in the past (by using work as an excuse)  like what you ask? Well let’s start with yoga (I am a certified yoga teacher after all), banjo? Yes indeed I have one, Rosetta Stone Spanish ? Yup I have the set all ready to go…. Get back into jogging ? Ugh that’s a tough one as I hate jogging but yup that’s on my list too….
